Concentration of Fragrance
All perfumes, whether for men or women, contain a fragrance concentrate (essential oils) diluted in a mixture of alcohol and water. The concentration percentage of a fragrance and its alcohol level affect the longevity of its scent and also determine its category. There are four types of perfumes, each with specific characteristics:
Cologne
This is the lightest and least persistent type of fragrance. Its concentration varies from 2 to 5%. It is a fresh, invigorating scent associated with cleanliness and freshness.
Eau de Toilette (EDT)
Eau de toilette is one of the four most popular types of perfume. It's perfect for everyday wear. Its concentration ranges from 5 to 12%. The top notes make up half of the fragrance. The perfumer focuses on the freshness and release of the scent.
Eau de Parfum (EDP)
Sometimes called eau de toilette or eau de parfum, its concentration varies between 12 and 20%. Eau de parfum is characterized by a long-lasting scent that lasts from 5 to 10 hours. The fragrance is primarily composed of heart notes. The perfumer highlights these notes to enhance the fragrance's radiance. More concentrated than eau de toilette, eau de parfum is generally more persistent and leaves a more pronounced trail.
Pure fragrance
Also called perfume extract, this is the most concentrated product. Its concentration varies between 20 and 40% in a 96% pure alcohol solution. This type of fragrance lasts longer than others. It is generally reserved for special occasions, particularly evening events. The fragrance is primarily composed of base notes. The perfumer focuses on the high quality of these base notes to enhance the tenacity and depth of the perfume. A few drops of perfume applied directly to the skin, preferably on pulse points, are enough to reveal its intensity and sillage.
